'Riverview Cottage' is situated near American River overlooking the
Pelican Lagoon Marine Sanctuary - just a short stroll to the water.
It is
a 5 minute drive from American River township and 15-30 minutes from
Prospect Hill and Pennington Bay on Kangaroo Island's wild and
unspoiled south coast.
There's room for the children to play in the fully-fenced area. Enjoy
cooking your meals outside on the wood barbeque or relax on the
veranda and enjoy the views of the water through the cottage garden.
Take an energetic walk on the path along Pelican Lagoon starting from
the Cottage.
Do
some serious bird-watching, identify the native plants or observe the
nocturnal birds and animals such as fairy penguins, possums, kangaroos
and wallabies by the light of a torch. You may spot a pod of dolphin
in the lagoon.

Identification books are available in our library.
Watch
the next door neighbours muster their sheep into the sheep-yards.
Climb
the hill behind the cottage to see the sun rise over Pelican Lagoon
and American Bay or take a Kangaroo Island wine in your hand and
listen to the waterbirds 'communicating' with each other as the
evening shadows fall.
You
can write letters to home at the writing desk on the stationery
provided.
In
American River you'll find a small
supermarket and bottle shop, a wharf and boat ramp, a shop selling
fresh oysters and two restaurants.
Diesel
and petrol are available. You will be only twenty minutes from the
beautiful swimming beaches of the north and the wild waves of the
south coast.

Thirty minutes drive in either direction will take you to the other
two main towns, Penneshaw and Kingscote.
You
can take a Penguin tour (see the Island's Fairy Penguins in their
natural habitat), an educational aquarium tour at the KI Marine
Centre, sip wine from the many local wineries or taste organic honey
made by ligurian bees from different flowers at 'Island Beehive'.
You
can even book a fishing tour for the day and catch your own whiting.
An interesting 2 hour drive will take you past Seal Bay, Vivonne Bay
and Hanson Bay to Flinders Chase National Park at the western end of
the island.
There
are several good restaurants and café's in the townships of Penneshaw
and Kingscote, dotted along the north coast and at Flinders Chase.
